Ingredients

Lime wedges
½ Buy
Cane sugar syrup
1 cl Buy
Ginger Beer
10 cl Buy
Dark rum (Traditional rum)

Preparation

  1. Using a muddler, crush a ½ lime cut into 4 directly in the glass
  2. Fill the glass with ice
  3. Add the ingredients in the order of the recipe, except the ginger beer and the rum
  4. Top up the glass with ginger beer.
  5. Stir then add the traditional dark rum. 
  6. Once the rum is added, do not stir the cocktail to preserve the "dark and stormy" effect.

History

The «Dark and Stormy» is one of the very rare recipes registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The recipe was created just after the First World War and did not include muddled lime or cane sugar. A sailor is said to have named it by comparing the drink to a cloud so dark that only a man who was mad or dead would put to sea in such weather, and ordered another «Dark and Stormy».
